The Colorful World of Hamad Al Humaidhan

Celebrated 12-Year-Old Artist Holds Show for Charity.

//Dar Al-Funoon and Contemporary Art Platform Kuwait (CAP Kuwait) collaborate to showcase the talent of virtuoso painter Hamad Al-Humaidhan.

Title: Colorful World
Dates: 14 to 28 of December 2011
Location: Shuwaikh, Block 2, St. 28. Life Center: Top Floor.

(Across from Shuwaikh Immigration Office, same building as Eureka & Midas)

Hamad Al Humaidhan is a young boy of 12 and has been painting since the age of 7. His early exhibitions were in England; the family lives in the United Kingdom where his mother is seeking a doctorate in Microbiology.

Initially, Hamad’s love of art started as a hobby. This soon became an addiction with him visiting museums, art galleries and historic buildings rich in culture to advance to what was becoming his passion. His early exhibitions were held in England; where he has been featured in local and national newspapers following his sell-out exhibitions. In May 2010, Hamad was commissioned to create the Birthday Card in celebration of the 180th Anniversary of Covent Garden market in London. This attracted international media interest of outlets such as the BBC and ITV.

Hamad paints his world with youthful emotions—his characters some real, some legendary and others just imaginary are composed with mastery. His paintings are vivid and youthful expressions, which today can be compared to any established artists developing their subjects on society.

Hamad Al Humaidhan placed fourth in Top Tenz list of Exceptional Children and Teenagers and has been featured on the BBC, amongst other major media outlets. Proceeds from Hamad’s exhibition will go to the Kuwait Dream Centre for autistic children.

PrettyGreenBullet – The Second Exhibition

An exhibition celebrating the second year of Ghadah Alkandari’s blog PrettyGreenBullet, this one-night show will display paintings and drawings, as well as everyday notes, doodles and sketches done by the artist over the last year. Because of the vagaries of Alkandari’s mind, even she can’t be sure what the final outcome of the show will be. The nature of her daily evolution and devolution of ideas form the basis of the PrettyGreenBullet experience; and this exhibition, the nutshell.

Date: Monday 5th, December 2011
Time: 7pm to 9pm
Location: Dar Al Funoon

Helmi El Touni Exhibition

Helmi El-Touni has been illustrating works for children since his sophomore year in college. He has worked to promote the use of “pure Egyptian visual content” in works for children for over 40 years, showing his devotion to his country and culture, and simultaneously, from a more outward-reaching perspective, he was also the first Egyptian artist ever to receive a non-Arab award for illustration, at Leipzig in 1982. When his Most Beautiful Folk Tales went on to win the Bologna Ragazzi New Horizons award for his publishing house in 2002, the jury commented that “…After so many ‘Orients’ invented in the West, here we finally are given a view of far off lands untrammeled by artificial overlays. For a young western reader this book could provide an entirely new insight into a world that has always been presented through filters and interpretations. The authentic origins of this work are evident in the different stylistic perspectives while the vibrant use of color is a narrative element that captures the reader’s attention from the outset.”

Exhibition Hours: 18 October – 19 October 2011
Time: 10:00 to 2:00PM and 5:30PM to 9:30PM

Some of the painting displayed will be for sale.

International Youth Day 2011

Taken from their Facebook page:

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kuwait is glad to invite you to its first ever celebration of International Youth Day. In a bid to further expand its youth programme, UNDP Kuwait is throwing the world-renowned PechaKucha night for youth to attend. Comedienne Hoda Marafie will be the hostess for the evening.

International Youth Day is an opportunity to express, raise awareness and become aware of development issues as it relates to Kuwaiti youth.

This event is intended to symbolize our commitment to inspire youth to become conscientious, active, global citizens who are contributing members of the general community. We will use this occasion to celebrate young people who are positively contributing to their personal and community development locally and internationally.

Specifically, the event will provide a platform to highlight the following themes:

* The exhibition hall will sample government institutes, civil societies and private companies that provide a programme for youth in Kuwait locally and internationally.

* PechaKucha 20×20 is a simple presentation format where 20 images are shown, each for 20 seconds. The images forward automatically as the presenter talks about them. The speakers will feature a sample of active, dedicated and inspirational young people who are significantly contributing to their community’s development. Using this occasion to celebrate their achievements, they will also bring to light the challenges they faced during their journeys.

* Art statement is an interactive piece where young people can express inspirational messages to other youth. It is intended to be a symbol of the youth in Kuwait’s commitment to further contribute to development.

Date: Thursday, August 11 at 9:00pm
Location: At the UN HOUSE. Mishref, Block 7, Diplomatic Square. (Opposite GUST)
