A boppin’ 1950s teenage story with rockin’ tunes popular around the world.

Grease, a perennially popular musical comedy, centers on the daily lives of the cool kids in a 1950s American High School. Grease is acted by AUK students, and directed by Assistant Professor of Drama, Yassi Jahanmir, with musical direction by Professor Anna Karadimitrova. An orchestra of professional musicians will accompany the students. Grease’s raucous antics will have you laughing and you will be singing along to your favorite songs, such as Greased Lightning, Summer Nights, and Hand Jive. Grease is a crowd-pleaser, for the whole family, that will run from November 28-December 1, 2018 in AUK’s Campus Auditorium.

Show Synopsis: Experience the friendships and adventures of a group of high school kids in the 1950s. Jocks, nerds, and squares can stay at home, this musical centers on the T-Birds, a gang of rebels clad in leather jackets, and the Pink Ladies, iconoclastic dames who don’t let anyone tell them what to do. You will experience the ups and downs of their teenage lives as we follow the unlikely pairing of new girl, Sandy Dumbrowski and bad boy greaser, Danny Zuko, as they deal with high school cliques and judgments.

Director Biography: Yassi Jahanmir is an Assistant Professor of Drama at the American University of Kuwait and has directed, choreographed, acted, stage managed and performed as a professional synchronized swimmer in NYC, California, and Arizona. Some favorite directing projects include: The Love for Three Oranges, West Side Story, Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters, Come and Go, Venus and The Servant of Two Masters. She holds a PhD in Theater and Performance Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Musical Director Biography: Anna Karadimitrova is a graduate of the National Music Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria and further specialized her training at the European Opera Centre in Manchester, UK. She has been a featured soloist in countless oratorios and symphonic productions., including Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s Creation and Messiah as well as Mozart’s Requiem. She has also had leading roles in a variety of operas, such as Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte, Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and L’italiana in Algeri and Verdi’s Rigoletto. Along with teaching music at Kuwait English School, Anna has appeared as a soloist in local concerts with Kuwait Chamber Philharmonia, in the Dar al-Athar concert series and Ahmadi Music Group productions including Pirates of Penzance, Carmina Burana, West Side Story, Semele, Dido and Aeneas, Acis and Galatea, and Vivaldi’s Gloria. Anna joined AUK faculty as vocal and vocal ensemble instructor in 2007. She has also been the musical director of the previous AUK musicals, including The Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, and West Side Story.
